Mobile broadband: frequently asked questions

Here are answers to some common questions about mobile broadband connections.

Show contentHide content Where can I find my subscription, device, and mobile broadband provider details?

Follow these steps:

Click to open Connect to a Network.

Right-click the mobile broadband network, and then click Properties.

    Click the Subscription tab.

Show contentHide content What is a SIM?

SIM stands for subscriber identity module. A SIM is a small, removable card that contains subscriber identity and security information for cellular services. Some data cards might not have physically identifiable or removable SIMs. A SIM uniquely identifies your subscription to the network and is required to establish a mobile broadband connection.

Show contentHide content What is a mobile broadband PIN and how does it work?

A mobile broadband PIN is the same as the subscriber identity module (SIM) PIN used on most mobile phones. You can enable the PIN to help secure the SIM. When a PIN is enabled, the device is locked when it is turned off or when it is removed from the computer. To use the SIM again, you must enter the PIN the first time the device is restarted. You can disable the PIN at any time.

For more information, see Enable, disable, or change a mobile broadband PIN and Unlock or unblock your mobile broadband connection.

To enable a PIN, find the PIN that was provided by your mobile operator (you can change it later). It should be listed in the information you got with your subscription. Follow these steps:

Click to open Connect to a Network.

Right-click the mobile broadband network, and then click Properties.

Click the Security tab, and then click Enable PIN.

In Current PIN, type the PIN you got from your mobile operator, and then click Enable PIN.

Once you've enabled a PIN, you aren't required to enter it every time you use your device, but you must enter it each time you restart your device or when your device comes out of hibernation.
Warning

Entering multiple incorrect PINs can result in your account being blocked until you get a PIN unblock key (PUK) from your mobile operator. If you are connected at the time, your existing connection will be ended if your account is blocked. The number of allowed PIN attempts varies with different cellular phones and services, but it's shown on the dialog box for entering the PIN. Repeated attempts to unblock a PIN with an incorrect PUK might cause the SIM to become permanently unusable.

The default PIN is set by the mobile operator. There are two ways to get this PIN:

If this is the first time you're doing a PIN-related task, check the information that came with your subscriber identity module (SIM) or subscription. Your mobile operator should have given you the default PIN.

If you don't find the default PIN in the information that came with your SIM, contact your mobile operator.

Show contentHide content Where do I get an access string or access point name (APN)?

When you set up a mobile broadband connection, you're asked to provide an access string or an APN to help identify your mobile network. An access string (for CDMA devices) or APN (for GSM devices) should be included in the information that came with your subscriber identity module (SIM) or subscription. If you don't find it, and you have trouble connecting to the Internet, contact your mobile operator.

Show contentHide content How do I restart the device?

You can restart the device by removing and reinserting it, by turning the computer off and back on, or by resuming from hibernation or from sleep.
