XL Appoints Huawei as Managed Services Partner

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, has exclusively been selected by PT XL Axiata Tbk (XL) as partner to manage its telecommunications network.

Huawei will take complete responsibility for the multi-vendor and multi-technology network. The scope of work encompasses end-to-end network management including multi-vendor operations and maintenance, network performance management, field operations, 24/7 network assurance, spare parts management and customer problem management.


Indonesia is one of the largest countries in Asia comprising of over 17,000 islands. With a population of over 240 million people it is the fourth most populous country in the world with some of the densest cities. It is one of the fastest growing markets for mobile communications with over 190 million users. This agreement allows XL to offer better network and service quality to its fast growing over 40 million customers base whilst Huawei manages the network.

Hasnul Suhaimi, President Director, XL said, "This strategic agreement with Huawei allows us to focus on our core business to offer new and innovative services whilst improving the network quality. This will allow us to differentiate ourselves to compete successfully in the market and help us address the future challenges."

Hasnul added that Huawei was selected as it not only met XL's requirements for Managed Services but its people transfer process would ensure a seamless staff integration with a promising future and career development. As part of the 7-year agreement, over 1,200 employees will be transferred to Huawei. Furthermore Huawei was able to demonstrate that it had the capability to maintain and improve XL's existing high quality network.

Huawei Announces Two New GigaSite Solutions Addressing Current and Future Capacity

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, unveiled two new wireless broadband solutions for boosting capacity: the ARU (Adaptive Radio Unit) and the AtomCell, which are part of its GigaSite suite of solutions.

Typically, the balance of data traffic distribution is uneven, as 80% of data traffic is carried by only 20% of all sites. In hot and blind spots, operators need to improve network capacity, quality of service and lessen the difficulty of site acquisition, without adding macro sites.

As the industry’s highest capacity radio unit, capable of supporting gigabit throughput in one box, Huawei’s ARU complements a strategy of building solutions that are multi-standard, multi-spectrum and software defined. Integration of an adaptive antenna system and RF unit enable the Huawei ARU to simultaneously support beamforming and multi-sector networks, using the same space and antenna.

Huawei’s AtomCell is the industry’s lightest, most compact, flexible, and most highly integrated small cell. At the core of the AtomCell is the Atom; providing power amplifier, radio frequency, and baseband functionality. These features, combined with a transmission and an antenna unit, enable AtomCell to function as a complete base station. When four Atoms are combined, an AtomCell can also support user-targeting beamforming to improve subscriber experiences. The AtomCell can interface with multiple backhaul connections, including copper, optical, microwave and TDD backhaul.

In the past, operators incurred considerable cost and site location difficulties when deploying separate base stations and antenna systems on different spectrum. The introduction of Huawei SingleRAN changed the business model for network deployments, allowing multiple standards to be accommodated in one cabinet. Global uptake of SingleRAN has established a benchmark for operator networks to provide multi-standard and multi-mode support, which is now complimented by the uniquely innovative ARU and AtomCell.

Xperia Play 2 Picture by Jsus


Jsus, the same guy who caused so much controversy when he sent me that Xperia Arc HD picture is now back with an image of the Xperia Play 2. Of course, I advise you to be cautious and consider this a render or a concept, although my source tells me that this is supposed to be a real device…

This time I’ve used a watermark on the photo so other big websites won’t steal this scoop. Well, my source say that the Xperia Play 2 will feature a 4.3 inch display with a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, an 8.1 megapixel camera with autofocus, 16x digital zoom and LED flash. There’s also a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual core processor on board, but that aspect hasn’t been decided 100% yet. The design reminds me of a LG or Samsung Android smartphone and I can’t help but wonder why the handset doesn’t use the 3 capacitive buttons for Android 4.0, instead of these 4.

As you can see we have pretty much the same control system as the one on the Xperia Play 1 and that notification bar that’s supposedly transparent like on the Xperia S, all the way at the bottom of the keyboard. I’ve heard speculations for a while now that in the future Sony portofolio there’s a model called the Xperia X or Hayabusa that’s rumored to be the Xperia Play 2. Could this be it, the PSP Phone 2?

Camera Comparison: Sony Xperia S, Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Sensation XL, Nokia N8 and Fujifilm Finepix T200



The HTC Sensation XL, Nokia N8 and Samsung Galaxy S2 have all in their own right won a Recombu Camera Phone Faceoff so it makes sense we pit them against one another. The Sony Xperia S should get in on the action being the latest 12-megapixel handset coming out in March.

As a category of tech however, all these handsets are out to prove a point - that they can take on the real deal - compact cameras. Most likely to suffer from camera-phone leaps and bounds are the sub £100 cameras such as the Fuji Finepix T200, so we've got one, are comparing it against the best phones of today and tomorrow, and sharing our raw data so you can reach your own conclusions.

A note to readers, our Sony Xperia S sample is not final build software, so there is room for change in terms of processing of images (noise handling, exposure etc).



In standard comparison style, we've created a grid of images above, these can be clicked through so peruse and abuse until you decide upon your own winner (once we've announced ours of course). We've taken a series of shots: four outdoor testing different scenes, two macro shots and two indoor shots, one with flash and one without. The aims today are to find a camera phone king and question whether a camera phone can take on a fully fledged compact camera.

Let the shootout commence:

Outdoor: Direct light source

Aside from the Sony Xperia S, these phone are all winners of previous challenges so we're starting at the deep end. The light in the tunnel was very bright with the sun right behind and a scene like this is just asking for a washed out photo. So how did our contenders do?



The instant winner is the Fuji Finepix. With the most balanced exposure and best dynamic range the shot doesn't look washed out and detail is discernable in the darks and lights. A very close second is the Nokia N8. More washed out, the 12-megapixel Finn offers some very clean lines surrounding the light-source proving that older tech isn't necessarily worse tech. Neither however is new tech, with the only other 12-megapixel contender, the upcoming Sony Xperia S, picking up third place with an ever so slight white wash when compared to the silver and gold.

Outdoor: 70:30

They say that when shooting the sky, a rough 70:30 split between earth and air makes for the most visually appealing picture. The problem with 70:30 splits on a clear day? Over exposure. Skies become white instead of blue in order to make the foreground stand out. How did our 70:30 snappers fair?



The new kid on the block, the Sony Xperia S has snatched the crown in this round. Proving that better saturated roofs can swing a win, with great foreground detail and colour coupled with a very attractive sky, it maintains good contrast levels and produces a great overall image. Second is the Nokia N8. Slightly more subdued and delivering arguably the most realistic colours, great sky detailing is coupled with an agreeable depth to the image. Third is the HTC Sensation. Good levels of saturation in the background make way to very nice levels of detail in the foreground. As with the Sony Xperia S, it's picked up on the slight yellow daylight hue in the air and picks up a very respecable bronze in the process.

Outdoor: Backlight + Macro = Oh no

Usually, we'd either give a camera a backlit shot or a macro shot to handle. Not in this test - these are winners remember.

In turn, we focus on a dark bud on a tree and a bright blue sky. All were taken as close as focus would permit on the specific camera (which is why, for example the N8 is much further away than the HTC Sensation XL) and the Nokia N8 and Fuji T200 had to be forced into Macro. We will decide our winner by how well the camera balances background and foreground lighting, not necessarily the most in focus shot.



Winning. It's just something the Sony Xperia S does very well and you guessed it - it's just won again. Despite being test-software, it's delivered a pretty incredible amount of detail on the tree while retaining a huge amount of background colouration, in contrast to, say, the Fujifilm T200 which loses out in the backdrop. We'd strongly advise clicking through on the image to see just how impressive this level of detail is. In addition, it was a breeze to focus on the bud, a blessing in the face of other devices requiring we take as many as 4 shots to focus. Winning.

Second is the HTC Sensation XL. Also a breeze to focus with just a touch, it produced a less detailed but very handsome picture with a great amount of information on the branch and no overblown skys. While the N8 may have produced an arguably better picture than the HTC Sensation XL, it was a nightmare to focus with us having to re-frame the shot in order to achieve the one we got. Still, we think you'll agree, very good, balanced outcomes are worth the effort giving Nokia's N8 a bronze.

Detail: "Can you read that number plate?"

You're car's been scraped, the assailant drives off, you pull out your phone and snap a picture. You'll need some pretty receptive megapixels to track your perpetrator and we're here to tell you which camera would do the best job. Reason would have us believe that the Fujifilm with its 14-megapixel sensor would be in the best position to grab as much information as possible, with the two 12-megapixeled camera phones tailing its tracks, the reality however might prove surprising:



The unquestionable winner in this round is the Sony Xperia S. In fact, it's the Xperia S' picture that prompted us to black-bar the number plate it was so legible. There is a fair amount of grain on the shot, so when compared to the Fuji, it looks a lot less smooth, however in a detail round it's detail that scores points and it's the Sony Xperia S that delivered the only legible number-plate of the bunch.

The best overall picture and a close second is the Fujifilm Finepix T200. While it goes without saying that had we used its impressive 10x zoom it would have won, at its widest angle, we got five of the seven digits of the license plate. That it softened the image more will prove more flattering when shooting things like people, but in a round like this, every crevice counts.

Coming in third is the Nokia N8 proving our anticipated top three to be near enough on the money. With two digits legible, it hammers the final nail in the coffin - for tiny number plate capture, 12-megapixels is better than 8.

Outdoor macro

Once again, we are taking a macro shot with some pretty spectacular lighting and a good amount of depth. With a coin from Mauritius, we do our best to identify which camera handles tricky metal while also assessing how close we can get to our subject.



If the last round was about landscape detail, this round is about close up detail and while it produces arguably the most attractive shot, the Fuji T200 softens the harsh detail on the coin missing out on our top three. With the Nokia N8 not even focusing properly in close quarters, the winners are the remaining handsets. It's such a close call, were almost begrudged to pick one, however if we must we'd call the Samsung Galaxy S2 the winner with its incredible detailing of every chip, nick and scratch. Second would be the HTC Sensation XL and third the Sony Xperia S. All were a breeze to focus on and impressed us no-end in this round.

Indoor Macro

We usually take a picture of a flower to illustrate freshness, insinuate an aroma and capture nature's colour pallet at its most vibrant. Not today. These are dried flowers, cob-webbed with dust and altogether a little more Miss Haversham than Hermione Granger. The camera winner will therefore need to pick up the withered within the beauty.



As with the first round, our winner is the Fujifilm Finepix T200, followed by the Sony Xperia S and closely trailed by the HTC Sensation XL. With the best overall exposure, the Fuji T200 captured the off yellow of the flower's pale petals. The webbing is clear and the whole shot looks accurate. The Sony Xperia S captured a great amount of detail in the centre of the rose, just falling behind on overall exposure while the HTC Sensation over-yellowed the flower and over-greened the leaves ever so slightly despite fantastic detail placing it third.

Indoor: No flash

This is a noise round and Nugo's fur is a prime spot for noise to breed, with its dark colouration there's every danger that rather than a detailed grey it will become a speckled colour bath. Despite all the cameras compensating well, the scene wasn't lit well from the front with no artifical lighting.



Which camera handles itself best when challenged with a furry subject indoors? The Nokia N8 does. With the most amount of detail against the least amount of noise, fur is discernable as are Nugo's eyes and the overall shot is well exposed. Second is the Sony Xperia S. While producing some noise, the overall scene is well exposed and there is depth across Nugo's face, with more in the pink areas than any other contender. Finally, in third place is the Samsung Galaxy S2. Producing more noise than either Nokia or Sony's efforts, it nevertheless betters the other two shooters with a fine amount of detail and depth.

Indoors: Flash

To fill out Nugo's wrinkles and create an altogether more flattering shot, we get out our fill-flash. This should take some strain off the noise processing so detail on Nugo's fur should be more life-like. In addition, we can also hope for a well balanced overall scene.



The reality is thankfully in-line with our expectations, at least from three of the cameras. Unsurprisingly the Xenon flashes of the Fujifilm Finepix T200 (gold) and Nokia N8 (silver) win the final round with Xenon being a standard on compacts and one that has fared well for the Nokia N8 in previous tests. The Samsung Galaxy S2 with its dual LED flash comes in third concluding our final round and deciding on a winner.

Conclusion

Our leader-board is as follows:

Sony Xperia S - 14 points
Fujifilm Finepix T200 - 11 points
Nokia N8 - 11 points
HTC Sensation XL - 5 points
Samsung Galaxy S2 - 5 points
Ironically, we've got a joint second and third. The newest device, the Sony Xperia S has managed to seize the crown despite not sporting final release software. It captures a shot incredibly fast, produces a fine picture and also offers amongst the most intuitive UI with a great focusing system. The joint second place goes to the Fujifilm T200 and Nokia N8, though the prior is considerably easier to use and more adept to macro shots. The winner's board pits the HTC Sensation XL and the Samsung Galaxy S2 joint in third place with both showing a real forte for macro and along with the Sony Xperia S, delivering the best focusing systems of our test.

The leader-board isn't the only reason we put together this comparison, we wanted to ask the question, can a mobile phone camera rival a sub-£100 compact camera. Clearly, the answer is yes - to a degree.

To what degree exactly? With a 10x optical zoom as opposed to no optical zoom on any of the mobiles, the Fujifilm would be the only viable option to take on, say, a holiday to Florence or to your child's nativity play when you're two rows from the back. Also, as is clear in the final shot, if you plan on using a flash - nothing beats Xenon, something 99% of compacts have.

What this comparison shows is that now, top-end camera-phones can indeed rival compacts for day to day snaps and produce some incredible pictures, with the latest from Sony whetting our appetites for the MWC reveals next week. Until a decent optical zoom lands on a mobile phone however, as much as we love our camera-phones, our compact is here to stay.

EDK version 2.0 now available


Over the last few months, we’ve published a number of Extension Development Kit (EDK) blog posts and tutorials to help you develop extensions for both the Timescape social network app and the Music player in our Xperia™ smartphones. Now we’ve got another update for you – EDK 2.0 – and it includes an updated Timescape™ API that enables you to incorporate Facebook™-like actions (such as “liking” or commenting) for the users of the external apps you create for Timescape™. We’ve also included an emulator for Smart Extras for your convenience.. Read on for more details and to download EDK 2.0.
We’re excited to launch version 2.0 of the EDK, which has some new features added to further improve this toolbox. The first change is an updated version of the Timescape™ API, the interface used by Timescape™ to generate data displayed for the app. This includes an update for the EventStream, which is an event engine used to create a list of events displayed in Timescape™. For the extensions you create for Timescape™, you now have the ability to add actions for your users to react to social media events, such as “liking” a post or replying to a comment to a picture you’ve posted.  For detailed info on Timescape™, check out the Timescape extensions overview page. EDK 2.0 also contains the Smart Extras emulator from the Smart Extension SDK. Further explanation of this emulator is available on the Smart Extension SDK overview page.
EDK 101 – the basics
In order to create custom extensions for the Timescape and Music player apps in Xperia™ smartphones, we created the EDK. The EDK itself consists of two parts:
A binary that can be downloaded using the SDK Manager from Android SDK.
Code examples and documentation for Timescape™ and Media player.
The EDK shows you how to create extensions that extend the current features of Timescape™ and Media player. When you install the EDK, the toolkit also includes the LiveKey emulator application and the Smart Extension emulator. The LiveKey™ emulator provides a UI for developing and testing extensions that extend the features of the LiveKey™ button on the LiveSound headset. The Smart Extension emulator provides a UI for developing and testing extensions for Smart Extras™ accessories – SmartWatch and Smart Wireless Headset pro.
We have an EDK developer section that gives instructions for downloading and installing the EDK. We’ve also updated for EDK FAQ section with 2.0 details. If you have any questions, post them in the EDK developer support thread on Google groups.

Operator opportunities in cloud service delivery – optimization and monetization


Everyone from content providers, to users, to operators can benefit from the network-enabled cloud and cloud service delivery. The current over-the-top model for cloud service delivery has some serious deficiencies – users, operators and content providers have their own priorities in terms of cost, efficiency, quality of experience (QoE) and as such want different things from the network-enabled cloud. With their network assets and existing relationships with users, operators are uniquely positioned to understand users’ needs for cloud services and meet those needs effectively.

Everyone can enjoy the benefits of the cloud services – users get access to content and content providers gain a means of global distribution. The problem – delivery – arises between the provider and the consumer. The current over-the-top delivery model for content and services raises a number of issues that are potential deal-breakers for migration to cloud services.

To differentiate, operators should aim beyond traditional cloud services and target premium cloud services instead, such as personalized video and real-time interactive gaming, where network performance, security and regulatory compliance are crucial.

The network-enabled, distributed cloud is an operator-specific approach to cloud that can be built on the key asset: the network. It addresses the network-dependent constraints of existing cloud solutions that affect performance of cloud-based applications.

By embracing the concept of the network-enabled cloud, operators can better control and profit from the provision of cloud services.

DOCOMO, NEC, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Fujitsu Jointly Develop LSI Intellectual Property for Multi-standard Modem


NTT DOCOMO, INC., NEC Corporation, Panasonic Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. and Fujitsu Limited announced today that they have jointly developed the software and hardware intellectual property for a single large-scale integration (LSI) chip that will enable small, energy-efficient modems to support the GSM, W-CDMA, HSPA+ and LTE mobile standards. Performance evaluation of the LSI engineering sample chip was completed previously, and as of today, all testing required to confirm interconnectivity to the mobile networks of major vendors has also been completed.

The development means that modems in future mobile devices will require just one chip, rather than two chips required in many conventional cases, in order to operate on multiple mobile standards. The single chip reduces power consumption by about 20% during both communication and stand-by, as well as decreases the production cost for mobile devices.

All mobile broadband standards supported by the chip meet 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) specifications. The LTE standard supports FDD (Frequency Division Duplexing) mode adopted by DOCOMO and TDD (Time Division Duplexing) mode expected to be adopted for LTE networks in China and other markets, which will help to further the development of advanced mobile devices by manufacturers worldwide.

The four partners, in addition to other major players in the mobile technology field, working through a joint venture currently being planned, aim to commercialize the chip in Japan and other countries as quickly as possible in response to market demands for smaller and more affordable mobile devices. The group additionally plans to pursue development of a multi-standard chip that is also compliant with the LTE-Advanced next-generation transmission standard.

This latest Gold Spot cinema advert sees the return of the fictitious 'Movie News' team to a movie theatre in the United States. They meet and interview the Orange Phone Guards, who take their jobs as guardians of entertainment very seriously to ensure a phone doesn't ruin your movie experience.

Orange introduces the ‘Phone Guards’ in the latest Gold Spot cinema advertising


Following the popular ‘Phone Break’ Gold Spot cinema advert, Orange released a fun follow-up that will be shown on big screens across the country. This latest Gold Spot advert sees the return of the fictitious ‘Movie News’ team to a movie theatre in the United States, where they meet and interview the Orange Phone Guards, who take their jobs as guardians of entertainment very seriously.

The tongue in cheek instalment, created by Fallon, focuses on the hilarious and over-enthusiastic measures taken by the ‘Talk and Text Enforcers’ to ensure that mobile phones do not ruin the cinema experience. The Gold Spot shows Orange Phone Guards confiscating audience members’ handsets, and screening them in scanners, ahead of the movie. The Orange Phone Guards state that they are ‘guardians of entertainment’ and use Orange sniffer dogs as a ‘canine strikeforce’ to uncover concealed mobile phones.

Spencer McHugh, Director of Brand for Orange UK said: “To date the success and popularity of our Gold Spot ads has been built on entertaining movie-goers while encouraging them to wonder what is coming next. So we’re really excited to share the latest Gold Spot creative with UK cinema goers, and hope that it encourages them to switch off their phones to make the most of the movie”.

Orange unveiled ‘Quick Tap Treats’ - the UK’s first mobile contactless retail reward scheme, in partnership with the EAT. restaurant chain. Quick Tap Treats will allow all Orange customers with NFC enabled handsets to simply tap their mobile phone on specially designed posters at any of the 110 EAT. outlets* so they can receive a free treat each day - from a free baguette or piece of fruit, to a free coffee.

Building on the success of the first contactless mobile payments service launched last year, the next phase of Quick Tap (the umbrella name used for Orange’s UK NFC services), sees all Orange customers with NFC handsets able to use their phones for the new Quick Tap reward programme, Quick Tap Treats.

Samsung demonstrated a quad-core processors Exynos

  Since its commercialization of the world's first TransferJet™ LSI in 2009, Sony has promoted an intuitive approach to the high-speed transfer and sharing of high-resolution photos and video images whereby such high speeds are realized by simply bringing different devices, such as digital cameras and PCs, into closer proximity with each other. Meanwhile, the recent proliferation of smartphones and tablet devices has led to a consequential increase in the need for wireless communication LSIs with a lower power consumption and smaller size, together with increased demands from the mobile computing environment for further enhancements in high-speed communications and reception performance.
  In order to accommodate these needs, Sony has developed the new TransferJet™ compatible LSI “CXD3271GW”, which achieves both a high transmission speed*1 and the industry's highest receiving sensitivity*2, in addition to significantly reducing power consumption over previous models to better facilitate its implementation in mobile devices.
  This LSI supports high-speed SDIO UHS-I as its host interface and introduces a new device driver design which provides a smooth and high-speed communications environment. These design enhancements have improved the new LSI's transmission speed*1 to over 350Mbps, which is close to the theoretical maximum effective speed of 375Mbps based on the TransferJet™ standard. Furthermore, Sony's unique high-speed transmission technology and wideband RF-CMOS technology enables stable communications between devices, achieving the industry's highest receiving sensitivity*2 of -82dBm*3 (when receiving Rate65) which in fact exceeds the standard TransferJet™ value of -71dBm. Additionally, the RF balun, the RF switch for transmitter/receiver and the LDO and OTP-ROM, which used to be the externally embedded parts are now all pre-embedded into the new LSI, and a dedicated external crystal controlled oscillator will no longer be required by supporting a multi-reference clock. These factors contribute to a reduction in the number of parts implemented in the sets, a smaller footprint, and reductions in power consumption.
  Additionally, Sony will provide a software development kit for Android™ to facilitate the LSI's implementation in Android™ devices together with the software development kit for Linux which has been provided with the previous models to developers.
  Sony will continue to actively promote the adoption of its TransferJet™ LSIs by manufacturers from fast-growing markets such as smartphones.

“Active” mobile broadband antenna puts users in the spotlight #MWC12


Nokia Siemens Networks and Telecom Italia to showcase unique beam forming capability* of Flexi Multiradio Antenna System at Mobile World Congress 2012

A mobile antenna system, which creates moving beams of radio signals that can be directed at individual users or confined to a specific area, is being showcased at Mobile World Congress 2012. Nokia Siemens Networks’ Flexi Multiradio Antenna System improves base station capacity and coverage to help address surging mobile broadband traffic and provide a better customer experience. The company is validating the improvements in base station performance in trials with Telecom Italia. The Flexi Multiradio Antenna System is based on Active Antenna System (AAS) technology, a key element in Nokia Siemens Networks’ Liquid Net architecture.

Nokia Siemens Networks will showcase a live Active Antenna System configuration at the company’s booth at Mobile World Congress 2012, Center Hall 8 Co1. The demo will illustrate beam forming, or the formation of dual-cell sector within the same antenna element, as well as the tilting capability of AAS.

Telecom Italia has been actively participating in the verification and testing of Nokia Siemens Networks’ Flexi Multiradio Antenna System. In fact, the leading Italian operator has been collaborating on a common R&D framework for intelligent antennas with Nokia Siemens Networks since 2006, contributing to the development of the Flexi Multiradio Antenna System. Initial results show that base station capacity can be increased by up to 65 percent and coverage by as much as 30 percent compared to traditional antennas with the new antenna system.

“We have started a trial of the Flexi Multiradio Antenna System to improve the network capacity and the end-user experience. Telecom Italia is convinced of the benefits of AAS technology and we are looking forward to introducing it in our network to boost our subscribers’ experience,” said Sandro Dionisi, head of Telecom Italia Lab and Global Consulting.

The Active Antenna System technology integrates several radio frequency (RF) components such as power amplifiers and transceivers into the antenna dipoles. This enables the unique beam forming capability that delivers significant performance enhancement and energy efficiency. In addition to improved capacity and coverage, AAS offers more flexible deployment, smaller footprint, lower power consumption and support for multi-technology networks. It also eliminates the need for separate RF units that are typically connected with feeders to traditional antennas.

CERNET Partners with Huawei to Deploy World's Largest 100G WDM Network


Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, announced that it has won a bid to deploy the 100G WDM network for Project 211 (phase 3) of the China Education and Research Network (CERNET). Covering the entire country, the coherent WDM technology based 100G network will be the world's largest in terms of geographic coverage.

CERNET is committed to building and managing a nationwide academic internet. With Huawei’s coherent WDM technology and OTN equipment, the 100G network will cover metropolitan areas, such as Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Chongqing. The 100G network will have the capability to offer a bandwidth of 8 Tbit/s over a single fiber, a transmission distance of 11,400 km and 913km biggest single span without REG (Regenerator), and it will allow co-transmission of 100G traffic with the existing 10G traffic. Full compatibility with the legacy network ensures smooth capacity expansion and protects CERNET's investment in network infrastructure. In addition, the 100G network meets the ultra-broadband challenges by offering a transmission rate (per wavelength) 10 times faster than mainstream networks, and it will provide a solid foundation for the rapid development of China's education network in the next decade.

LTE - Ericsson powers LTE Eco system at MWC 2012

Ericsson is the leading player in LTE technology and during the show it will demonstrate the latest developments in this technology.

It has also partnered with Qualcomm, LG, Sony, Renesas, Nvidia and ST-Ericsson to provide coverage for devices and chipsets built by these companies' chipsets  to fuel the LTE eco system

This collaboration allows the eco system partners to show their LTE products over live, state of the art Ericsson LTE infrastructure. Voice over LTE (VoLTE GSMA IR.92) and video calling over LTE (GSMA IR.94)  will be demonstrated on  Samsung and LG devices. A live demonstration of the world's first LTE to WCDMA voice handover (SRVCC, Single Radio Voice Call Continuity) will be shown in collaboration with Qualcomm. Circuit switched fallback (CSFB) voice services will be demonstrated on LG LTE smartphones.

Flexible charging solution puts electric cars in the fast lane


Research partners developed a cross-industry platform allowing drivers to control charging of electric cars
Purpose is to increase usability for drivers and build an ecosystem making it easier to deploy electric cars around the world

Through an innovative research project across several industries, Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) will bring mobile connectivity to electric cars and put choice and control over the charging schedule into the hands of drivers.

The new architecture allows drivers to control charging of cars while they are plugged into any ordinary power outlet. Additionally, the system directs energy costs to the car owners' bill.  The driver sets the time and amount to charge on a console in the car or remotely via a smartphone or tablet.

Using the mobile network, the car then communicates with the grid so that charging is scheduled based on energy prices on the grid, reducing user costs. For the energy utilities, coordinating the charging of cars across the grid is more efficient and sustainable.

To provide a range of perspectives the concept was developed in a consortium involving Volvo Car Corporation, Göteborg Energi, the leading utility in western Sweden, Ericsson and Viktoria Institute, a non-profit IT research institute.

Per-Åke Olsson, CEO at Viktoria Institute, said: "Our mission is to take knowledge to market as innovations. This is a successful example of cross-industry collaboration with great business potential. We believe that this project will support global market penetration of electric vehicles, thus helping society towards sustainable mobility."

Göteborg Energi is taking an interest in the digitalization of the charging infrastructure, and the strategies and possibilities it creates. "Electric vehicles will be a key component both for a sustainable society and for a smart grid. We are committed to making the charging of the vehicles easy, as well as optimizing the use of the power grid at the same time," says Lotta Brändström, CEO Göteborg Energi.

The Volvo Electric C30, now in low-scale production for leasing customers in Europe, has been used during the project and equipped with the in-vehicle meter and software. Lennart Stegland, Vice President Electric Propulsion Systems, Volvo Car Corporation, said: "Our basic view is that the owner of an electric vehicle shouldn't have to sacrifice any of the properties he or she expects from a luxury car. This smart technology for charging in any outlet, and paying automatically via your own electricity bill, is an excellent example of how we do everything to make the daily use easier for the customer."

Ericsson's contribution to the project is to understand and influence how existing and future mobile networks, services and terminals can support new business concepts as well as services that benefit society. Ericsson is providing IT and communications expertise.

Paolo Colella, Head of Consulting and Systems Integration at Ericsson, says: "New solutions like these need to seamlessly and reliably coordinate multi-party machine-to-machine and human-to-machine interactions, where both people and machines are mobile, while allowing secure financial transactions. Our job is to make that simple."

Key points of the project include:

Using existing mobile networks and the grid
 Having the electricity meter in the vehicle which allows control of charging, either immediately or on a schedule set by the driver, with the costs being allocated against the driver's bill.
 A flexible model to adapt to different regulations around the world, and support for a variety of novel business models - some with new actors like over-the-top application providers.
The project has been financed by the four partners as well as the region of Västra Götaland and the research foundation of Göteborg Energi.
The specially equipped Volvo Electric C30 will be on display at Ericsson's Hall 6 at LaFira during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, from February 27 - February 29, 2012.
