DOCOMO, NEC, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Fujitsu Jointly Develop LSI Intellectual Property for Multi-standard Modem


NTT DOCOMO, INC., NEC Corporation, Panasonic Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. and Fujitsu Limited announced today that they have jointly developed the software and hardware intellectual property for a single large-scale integration (LSI) chip that will enable small, energy-efficient modems to support the GSM, W-CDMA, HSPA+ and LTE mobile standards. Performance evaluation of the LSI engineering sample chip was completed previously, and as of today, all testing required to confirm interconnectivity to the mobile networks of major vendors has also been completed.

The development means that modems in future mobile devices will require just one chip, rather than two chips required in many conventional cases, in order to operate on multiple mobile standards. The single chip reduces power consumption by about 20% during both communication and stand-by, as well as decreases the production cost for mobile devices.

All mobile broadband standards supported by the chip meet 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) specifications. The LTE standard supports FDD (Frequency Division Duplexing) mode adopted by DOCOMO and TDD (Time Division Duplexing) mode expected to be adopted for LTE networks in China and other markets, which will help to further the development of advanced mobile devices by manufacturers worldwide.

The four partners, in addition to other major players in the mobile technology field, working through a joint venture currently being planned, aim to commercialize the chip in Japan and other countries as quickly as possible in response to market demands for smaller and more affordable mobile devices. The group additionally plans to pursue development of a multi-standard chip that is also compliant with the LTE-Advanced next-generation transmission standard.

DOCOMO, NEC, Panasonic Mobile Communications and Fujitsu have developed a chip that supports multiple communication standards


The Japanese company NTT DOCOMO, INC., NEC Corporation, Panasonic Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. and Fujitsu Limited today announced the joint development of the chip and the software to it, which has a small size, high efficiency and supports multiple communication standards: GSM, W-CDMA, HSPA + and LTE.

To date, complete evaluation of the effectiveness of engineering samples of the new chip, as well as all the necessary tests for compatibility with all major camera equipment suppliers.

As the developers of this product, it was created in order to release single-chip solution to support multiple communications standards, without having to use multiple chips to individual communications standards. This led to eventually reduce energy consumption by 20%, and the cost of the final product.

In the future, the above four partner companies are going to continue to develop multi-standard chip, which in future will be compatible with the standard next-generation LTE-Advanced.

DOCOMO Eyes Completion of New Disaster-preparedness Measures


NTT DOCOMO, INC., Japan’s leading mobile operator and provider of integrated services centered on mobility, announced that it has nearly completed implementation of a wide range of disaster-preparedness measures introduced in response to lessons learned from the experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011.

The measures, which were initially announced in April 2011, are designed to help secure mobile communications in key areas and facilities following a disaster, such as heavily populated areas and centers for coordinating emergency response, sheltering evacuees and delivering relief services. The measures also aim to strengthen DOCOMO’s ability to respond as fast as possible in disaster-affected areas and provide people with greater convenience and peace of mind through the use of mobile communications.

New Disaster Preparedness Measures

Secure communication for key areas/facilities (1) Install 104 large-zone base stations nationwide

DOCOMO to Strengthen Emergency Contact and Information Following Disasters

NTT DOCOMO, INC., Japan’s leading mobile operator and provider of integrated services centered on mobility, announced it will link its Disaster Message Board service to Google Person Finder and will also link its dmenu™ and i-menu services to various Twitter accounts as part of an initiative to use new information-communication technologies (ICT) for emergency communication systems that will help people to establish contact and stay informed during major disasters in Japan. The initiatives are two of the latest disaster-preparedness measures that DOCOMO has been introducing following the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011.

DOCOMO will link its Disaster Message Board service, which enables people in a disaster area to use their mobile devices to post messages that others worldwide can view to confirm their whereabouts and safety, and Person Finder, a web-based application that allows individuals to check and post on the status of relatives or friends affected by a disaster while also providing a common back-end to share and store data. DOCOMO users will be able to view the data stored to Person Finder and messages via the Disaster Message Board screen on their mobile devices. The service is expected to be operative by the end of March. DOCOMO plans to expand the availability of this emergency service in cooperation with NTT Group companies, as well as other carriers that provide emergency message board services.

In collaboration with Twitter, the top page of DOCOMO’s dmenu™ portal site for smartphones and i-menu portal site for i-mode-compatible phones will display links to Twitter accounts administered by national and local governments, utilities, infrastructure-related companies, mass media, etc. from February.

Both services will be made available if a major disaster occurs in Japan.

DOCOMO to Begin Voice Messaging Service for Communication during Disasters


NTT DOCOMO, INC., Japan’s leading mobile operator and provider of integrated services centered on mobility, announced that from March 1 it will begin operating the Disaster Voice Messaging service, part of the company’s ongoing introduction of new disaster-preparedness measures since the Great East Japan Earthquake.

The Disaster Voice Messaging service has a function that stores spoken messages from DOCOMO mobile users and then sends the messages as data files to a network server. The sender simply enters the recipient’s phone number and then records a message with their smartphone or mobile phone. A maximum of 20 messages, each up to 30 seconds in length, can be stored for up to 10 days. When a message arrives at the server, an SMS text message is sent automatically to the recipients’s phone. In parallel, the sender also receives an SMS message after the recipient downloads the data file and listens to the message. Thus, the sender can notice the status of each stored message.

The Disaster Voice Messaging service becomes operative in the event of a wide-scale disaster, such as an earthquake with an intensity of at least “6 lower,” or when a disaster leads to serious network congestion during which time customers might experience difficulties placing voice calls.

In principle, most docomo smartphones running Android™ 2.2 or higher, and i-mode™ mobile phones (docomo STYLE series) released after November 2011, are compatible with the service, with some exceptions. The smartphone app is free*, although packet communication charges apply when downloading the app. Software in compatible i-mode mobile phones must be updated.
DOCOMO will operate the Disaster Voice Messaging service on a trial basis from March 1 to 31 to enable customers to familiarize themselves with the service and its usage.

During disasters, DOCOMO will continue to operate its existing Disaster Message Board service, which enables users to communicate their safety to friends and loved ones via text messages sent to a special website.

*Some subscribers to mopera U may pay packet communication charges depending on their billing plan. Some sp-mode subscribers who play voice messages while overseas may pay packet communication charges depending on their billing plan.

DOCOMO to Add Tsunami Warnings to Early Warning “Area Mail™” Disaster Information Service


NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced that tsunami warnings issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency will be transmitted to customers’ mobile devices via DOCOMO’s Early Warning “Area Mail™” disaster information service beginning February 24.

Early Warning “Area Mail,” a Japanese-only service, promptly relays early warnings of strong earthquakes from the Japan Meteorological Agency, and also disaster and evacuation information issued by national and regional public institutions. The agency issues the warnings after special sensors detect signs of imminent seismic activity in a given area. Early Warning “Area Mail” is specially configured to immediately transmit warnings to mobile devices in the area with little or no effect from network congestion.

DOCOMO has established new disaster-preparedness measures in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake, including procedures to restore communication services as fast as possible to help ensure that customers have access to mobile communication following a disaster. By including tsunami warnings (in Japanese only) in its Early Warning “Area Mail” service, DOCOMO hopes to provide customers with enhanced levels of safety and security during disasters.

No monthly charge or communications charges are required to receive the service. Devices that already receive Early Warning “Area Mail” notifications will receive tsunami warnings automatically. Message-reception settings for 905i, 906i, 705i and 706i series devices must be manually configured to use the service.

Huawei Powered eAccess to Deploy World's First UMTS/LTE 1.7 GHz Network


Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced it will deploy the nationwide scale UMTS/ LTE convergence network for eAccess, Japan's leading telecoms operator. This is the world's first UMTS/LTE 1.7 GHz convergent network. Adopting Huawei's SingleRAN solution, this network can support WCDMA and LTE technologies simultaneously.

eAccess likes to deploy the most advanced mobile technology for its network. As the fastest growing telecoms operator in the past five years, eAccess's 3G strategy promoted the development of mobile broadband(MBB) across Japan. Amidst the challenges and opportunities of the MBB era, it is crucial for eAccess to maintain its role as the communication era industry leader. eAccess must also meet the needs of mobile broadband data services from its end users eAccess thus chose to deploy the ultra high speed LTE network.

Panasonic Eluga pictures and hands-on


Waterproof goodness

Panasonic has been talking about bringing a smartphone to Europe for quite a while. Announced on Monday at the Panasonic Convention 2012 in Hamburg, the Panasonic Eluga is that phone. Pocket-lint has had some time to play with the new handset and from what we have seen, it looks pretty impressive.

The 4.3-inch 960 x 540-pixel resolution OLED display is a particular highlight. It has impressive enough viewing angles, the touch response is good and the skin that Panasonic has put on Android is simple but very smart to look at.

The real treat though is the way the phone feels. At 103g it is lighter than a Galaxy S II and is incredibly thin, at 7.8mm. The design looks great and the matte black back gives the phone a very sturdy feel. All in all a very swish looking piece of kit and easily one of the most premium Android handsets we are to play with so far.

Despite the minimal design, Panasonic has managed to pack IP57 waterproofing and dustproof technology into the handset. We were shown calls being made from the phone underwater earlier on without any worrying looking signs appearing on the Eluga's screen.

Inside is a dual-core 1GHz OMAP 4430 processor which kept the handset ticking along quickly but things weren't quite the speed levels of say the Galaxy S II or Motorola RAZR.

The phone we were given to play with was running Android 2.3.5 and not Ice Cream Sandwich irritatingly, although Panasonic tells us ICS will be coming in Summer.

The phone has an 8-megapixel camera on the back, complete with 1080p video recording. We did snap a few stills and they definitely seemed decent enough.

Still images from the phone, along with video and websites can be pushed to Panasonic Viera TVs using the Viera Smart 2.0 application. Dragging media to the top of the screen will push it to a nearby television using what a presume is DLNA. The application is also due to come to iOS, allowing those with Apple devices to also take advantage of the media sharing technology.

DOCOMO Unveils Japan’s First Two Devices for V-High Multimedia Broadcasting Services


NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced two Android™-compatible mobile devices, the “docomo NEXT series AQUOS PHONE™ SH-06D” smartphone and the “docomo Tablet MEDIAS TAB N-06D,” Japan’s first devices compatible with V-High multimedia broadcasting service. The smartphone and tablet will be sold in Japan only from March and April respectively.

Users of the two devices will be able to watch mmbi, Inc.’s “NOTTV,” a mobile multimedia broadcasting station that will begin operating on April 1.*

The waterproof SH-06D smartphone features a 4.5-inch high-definition glass-less 3D display with a 1.2 GHz dual core CPU. It comes with a tabletop holder equipped with a built-in antenna that enables viewing of multimedia broadcasts while the smartphone is charging in the holder. The SH-06D smartphone is compatible with DOCOMO’s Osaifu-Keitai™ mobile-wallet services and can receive existing “one-seg” mobile TV.
